Sobesos: A Roman city in Cappadocia

Since there is not much written or drawn about Cappadocia outside of the classics, I met Sobesos thanks to the Nevşehir Museum Director, dear Murat Gülyaz. Although ancient sources mention a settlement called “Sobesos” located between the villages of Tomissos and Soandos, namely Taşkınpaşa and Soğanlı, it could not be found.

It was found in an unlikely place thanks to illegal excavators while the calendars were showing 2002. Excavations in the city, located 23 kilometers from the Ürgüp district center and located near Şahinefendi Village on volcanic land, continued until 2005 under the leadership of the Museum Director Murat Gülyaz. The main hall, which covers an area of approximately 400 m2, has a mosaic floor and plastered walls, the meeting hall with two rooms, one of which has mosaics, and the mosaic apoditorium, tepidarium, caldarium and fire ovens of the bathhouse built with the Hypocaust heating system just beyond were excavated, but the excavations were stopped.
